Portal, Puzzle, Pretzel, Pothole

Solo exhibition by Matt Goldberg

Dec 05 – Jan 30, 2026
Ingleside Gallery at Ballast Coffee, 329 W. Portal Ave, San Francisco

Ingleside Gallery at Ballast Coffee presents “Portal, Puzzle, Pretzel, Pothole” featuring a body of work by Matt Goldberg that steps beyond his ceramic practice into a new material vocabulary. The heart of the show lies in collage works that have been slowly building in his studio – improvisations that play with space, color, and a sharp, mischievous visual cadence.

Matt Goldberg is a San Francisco–based artist and educator whose practice centers on ceramics, sculpture, and the humor found in everyday forms. He holds an MFA in Sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Colorado.

Goldberg has been a core part of the Bay Area ceramics community for more than a decade. He serves as the Ceramic Programs Manager and Education Program Coordinator at SOMArts Cultural Center, where he also founded Clay Days, a long-running community workshop series. His teaching history spans City Studios, Children’s Day School, City College of San Francisco, and multiple SFAI programs, shaping artists of all ages across the Bay Area.

His exhibition record includes solo and group shows at Recology San Francisco, Fort Mason Guardhouse, Minnesota Street Project, Root Division, Embark Arts, and galleries in Los Angeles and Paris. Goldberg was an Artist in Residence at Recology, working directly with reclaimed materials from the San Francisco waste stream, and has participated in additional residencies at Palo Alto Art Center and Asylum Arts. His recent curatorial projects include the SF Artist Gift Shop pop-up and exhibitions for NIAD, Root Division, and SOMArts. Read the full press release here.
